Feed The Resistance: Vegan Carrot Dogs!

For several weeks now, I have been seeing social media posts about “Vegan Carrot Dogs” – so I finally gave in and tried it for myself!  I found several different recipes, all fairly similar, but I finally settled on the Smokey Vegan Carrot Dogs from Brand New Vegan.  The concept is pretty simple – you cut and peel the carrots to make them the basic shape and size of a hot dog, and then put them in boiling water for about 10 minutes to soften them up, giving them the texture of a hot dog.  Next, you marinate the carrots in a mixture that includes soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, veggie broth, maple syrup, liquid smoke, mustard, garlic pickled jalapeno juice and onion powder.  The carrots sit in that marinade for 4-6 hours and then they are grilled, just like any other hot dog.  The end result doesn’t taste exactly like a hot dog, but it’s much closer in both taste and texture, than any commercially made veggie dog I’ve ever had.

To pair with the Carrot Dogs, Dee picked “Idle Days” Citrus Saison from Door County Brewing Company.  The citrus in the beer worked extremely well with the carrots!
